Smoke and flames could be seen for blocks, witnesses reported.

Springfield Fire Battalion Chief Jeremy Lynn said he could see a column of smoke when he was leaving fire headquarters downtown to respond.

Lynn said the home’s occupants were outside and uninjured when firefighters arrived.

Fire marshals will investigate the cause of the fire, which is still undetermined, Lynn said.
